Breaking the Ice Summit 2024: Uniting Communities, Creating Opportunities

The Breaking the Ice Summit is a culturally centered event focused on addressing the five social determinants of health (SDOH):
    • Healthcare Access and Quality
    • Education Access and Quality
    • Social and Community Contexts
    • Economic Stability
    • Neighborhood and Environment
A variety of exhibitors will be onsite with information and resources for attendees to learn from and take home. Taking place on Saturday, April 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at West Acres Mall, this event is a platform for inclusive and equitable dialogue with all the cultures of our community.

SDOH are the conditions that impact a person's health and quality of life. Not knowing how to navigate the SDOH can cause health disparities and inequities. Breaking the Ice offers resources and opportunities to address each SDOH.

Understanding the five Social Determinants of Health

    Healthcare Access and Quality

Seeking medical care for both routine check-ups and during critical times is essential. Knowing where to go and who to see for the right reasons can be complex. Not everyone has the same access or ability to do these things.

    Education Access and Quality
Education extends beyond formal schooling. Individuals who haven't completed high school often face more health issues and may have shorter lifespans compared to those who have finished high school. Conditions like heart disease, diabetes and depression are more prevalent among this group. It's crucial to recognize that everyone should have access to health information and the opportunity to comprehend and apply it to make informed, healthy choices in their lives.

    Social and Community Contexts
Social networks and culture play a bigger role in our health than we often realize. Things like how our family eats, the friends we have, what activities we do for fun, and even how we balance work and life all affect how we think about and take care of our health and our family's health. Sometimes, people deal with problems and risks they can't change, and they learn about health from different sources. This can sometimes be bad or even dangerous for them.

    Economic Stability
Accessing resources that are necessary for life and well-being has a big effect on health. When people don't have stable lives because they're not working or they're not earning much money, it affects their nutrition and health too. In Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo, almost one out of every 10 people live in poverty, which is similar to what's happening across the country.

    Neighborhood and Environment
Where someone lives, the air they breathe, the water they drink and even their access to parks and healthy foods can affect their health. Some people live in places with more pollution, fewer parks or limited access to fresh food. These environmental differences can have significant impacts on health compared to those with better living conditions.

The Breaking the Ice Summit is more than just a gathering; it's a catalyst for change. Focusing on the five SDOH allows people from all cultures to come together to access vital information that can improve their well-being. It symbolizes inclusivity and equity.
