Peace Academy earns 2025 Inclusion Champion honors for transforming early education inclusion through leadership, community and lived impact.
In a preschool classroom tucked in Fargo’s Peace Academy, the room is filled with something more than songs and storybooks. It’s filled with belonging.
Children sit in a circle, captivated by a familiar voice – one of their favorite people, an Ambassador volunteer with a developmental disability, reading aloud with big pride. There’s laughter. There’s curiosity. And there’s something quietly radical happening: real inclusion, modeled in its most authentic form.
This is Peace Academy. And this is why they’ve been named the 2025 ChamberChoice Inclusion Champion of the Year.
Peace Academy has made inclusion the heartbeat of everything they do, setting a new standard for what early childhood education can—and should—be. Their mission, to nurture children, enrich parents and strengthen the community, isn’t just a statement. It’s a lived experience that begins in the classroom and ripples outward.
What sets Peace Academy apart?
1. Inclusion is foundational, not optional.
Peace Academy’s Ambassador Program welcomes adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities into the classroom, not as helpers or guests, but as leaders, role models and friends. These Ambassadors foster empathy, connection and joy – every single day. Â
The impact is big:Â
- 10 Ambassadors serve 179 preschoolers with warmth and consistency.Â
- More than 720 volunteer hours since 2022.Â
- 100% of surveyed parents say the program enhanced their child’s experience.Â
- 78% of families say their child now independently acknowledges people with disabilities—a 15% increase in just one year. This is proof that inclusion, when modeled, becomes second nature.
2. Every moment is a lesson in learning.
From monthly cultural celebrations and Spanish immersion to regular visits from Touchmark residents, Peace Academy integrates diversity and connection into everyday life.
3. Leadership that listens and leads with intention.
Executive Director Jana Bruhschwein and Assistant Director Kellie Knodel work closely with a board that includes disability advocates, speech pathologists and education leaders. Together, they shape priorities that are backed by action:Â
- A part-time staff member and $20,000 annual budget support the Ambassador Program.Â
- Ambassadors receive personalized books, Academy gear and thoughtful comforts like their favorite snacks.Â
- Annual appreciation nights, awards and games create lasting memories and a deep sense of belonging – for everyone.
4. Parents are partners.
Free education sessions connect families with early childhood experts, offering research-based strategies to support every child’s development.Â
- 98% of parents say topics are valuable.Â
- 60% attend or view the sessions, showing real demand for inclusive support that extends beyond classroom walls.Â
Inclusion, in every detail
Inclusion shows up in every person, program and partnership at Peace Academy. Â
- Their staff of 22 is 100% women, 18% racially diverse and 5% live with a disability.Â
- They partner with occupational therapy programs at University of North Dakota and University of Mary to build future-ready, inclusive practitioners.Â
- They host the Jeromy Brown Charity Bowl and present community inclusion awards each year.Â
Inclusion is embedded in everything they do—not as an initiative, but as an identity.Â
A model for what’s possible
Peace Academy shows us what’s possible when we stop treating inclusion like a checkbox and start building it into the bones of our institutions. They’re not just raising kids – they're raising expectations. Â
As we celebrate this year’s ChamberChoice Award winners, we honor those who transform values into action and show us that the best way to change the future is to shape it from the very start.Â
