Hear from Ashley Duchsherer, Mikaela Hestdalen and Jessica Mears on what they’re taking from Leadership FMWF and how it’s shaping their work, connections and community impact.

As the Leadership FMWF (LFMWF) Class of 2026 approaches graduation, participants are reflecting on what has shifted for them and how that will carry into their work and the community.

For those thinking about applying, their reflections offer a clear look at what this experience leads to.

Each participant walks away with something a little different. For some, it’s how they approach their role. For others, it’s who they now have in their corner or how they see the community around them.

Here’s how participants Ashley Duchsherer, Mikaela Hestdalen and Jessica Mears are putting that into words.

Ashley Duchsherer

Assistant Vice President, CSC Operations Manager, Gate City Bank

Ashley leads operational teams focused on delivering a consistent, high-quality customer experience. The role requires balancing performance, people leadership and constant change.

Through LFMWF, she’s taken a step back from the day-to-day to think more intentionally about how she leads.

“Participating in the program has helped me sharpen my strategic thinking, communication and community perspective in ways that directly support my team and the organization.”

But what stands out most isn’t tied to a specific session.

“The most valuable takeaway has been the relationships built within our cohort,” she said. “Knowing there are 38 other leaders I would step up for in a heartbeat, and who would do the same for me, has been both grounding and empowering.”

That experience has reshaped how she views leadership, not as something contained within an organization, but something that connects across the broader community.

Mikaela Hestdalen

Accreditation Specialist, Sanford Health

Mikaela’s work centers on quality, consistency and helping teams meet high standards across a complex health system.

Through the program, she gained a clearer understanding of what’s happening across the community.

“My biggest takeaway has been gaining a deeper appreciation for the incredible work happening across our community,” she said.

That includes a new awareness of the number of nonprofits operating in the region and the impact they create every day.

It’s already influencing how she shows up, both professionally and personally.

“This has inspired me to challenge my team to engage in more volunteer efforts, and it has encouraged my own family to get more involved.”

Jessica Mears

Region Retail Sales Manager, First International Bank & Trust

Jessica supports banking teams across multiple markets, focusing on growth, consistency and customer experience.

Through the program, she has gained a clearer understanding of how different leadership styles and perspectives come together.

“The opportunity to connect with professionals from a wide range of industries has broadened my thinking and reinforced the importance of adaptability, curiosity and community engagement.”

Some of the most impactful moments came from conversations with leaders across sectors, from nonprofits to public officials.

“It reinforced that leadership isn’t tied to a title. It’s about showing up, contributing and staying engaged.”

What carries forward

Each participant walks away with something different, but the common thread is how the experience continues beyond the program.

The relationships built within the cohort don’t stop at graduation. The perspectives gained continue to shape how decisions are made, and a deeper understanding of the community creates new ways to stay involved.

That’s the part participants carry with them. It shows up in how they apply what they learned, who they continue to lean on and where they choose to step in next.

Applications for the next LFMWF class are open through April 30, 2026.
