Step Up and Lead: Why Young Professionals Should Consider Board Service Now
By Setareh Campion, Director of Programs, FMWF Chamber
At the YP Summit, a breakout session on board service highlighted how getting involved early helps young professionals grow their leadership skills and make a lasting impact.
Learn how board service helps young professionals grow leadership skills, expand networks and make an impact in the FMWF community.
Board service isn’t just for executives with decades of experience. It’s one of the most rewarding and strategic ways for young professionals to grow, lead and make a lasting difference.
When you serve on a board, you gain something that goes beyond experience: a voice in shaping the future of your community. Whether you’re just beginning your career or looking to deepen your involvement, board service connects you to leaders, ideas and opportunities that expand your influence and impact.
Building a Legacy Starts Now
It’s never too early to start building your legacy, and across our community, that truth is coming to life in powerful ways.
Community members recently saw it firsthand at The Chamber’s Annual Celebration, where long-time business and civic leader Jeffry J. Volk was honored as the 2025 Legacy Leader. His recognition came from decades of service, investing time, vision and care into advancing this region. Jeffry’s story reminds us that leadership isn’t defined by titles, but by the willingness to step forward and serve.
That same spirit echoed through The Chamber’s recent Young Professionals Summit, where hundreds of emerging leaders explored what it means to grow, give back and lead boldly. During a breakout session on board service, attendees learned how getting involved early can accelerate both personal and community growth. The conversation mirrored Jeffry’s legacy: leadership starts with one step, one yes, one opportunity to make an impact.
Through opportunities like volunteering on Chamber committees, board service and leadership development, The Chamber lifts people into those opportunities—empowering professionals at every career stage to explore their purpose, build their networks and lead with intention.

How to Get Started in Board Service
You don’t have to know everything to get started. You just need the willingness to show up, learn and contribute. Here are a few ways to begin your journey in board service for young professionals:
- Start with your passions. Think about what causes matter most to you. The best board experiences come from serving organizations that align with your values.
- Understand your strengths. Some boards are strategic and policy-driven. Others are hands-on and community-focused. Knowing your skills will help you find the right fit.
- Tap into your networks. Is there an organization you are passionate about? Do you know someone else serving on a board? Tap into those connections to see what opportunities may be available.
- Say yes and follow through. Once you commit, be present and engaged. Your consistency builds trust and credibility.
The Chamber’s recent Committee Celebration captured what happens when professionals turn inspiration into action. From first-time volunteers to long-serving committee chairs, each person represented a story of commitment and proof that leadership takes many forms. The Chamber’s committees encompass a variety of focuses from public policy and military affairs to professional development and agribusiness. The FMWF community has many organizations and nonprofits that would greatly benefit from your perspective.
Many of those now serving on Chamber committees or local boards first found their spark at programs or events where ideas turn into ambition and ambition becomes impact. Whether you’re networking, learning or stepping into your first leadership role, every moment of engagement builds the foundation for future board service.
