FMWF Chamber applauds MN DNR for permit approval action
Moorhead, Minnesota (December 27, 2018) – Today the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MN DNR) granted a dam safety and public waters work permit for the revised Fargo-Moorhead Flood Risk Management Project, commonly referred to as “Plan B.”
Chamber board Chair Mark Nisbet of Xcel Energy commended the MN DNR for their decision, stating, “This is a critical step in the very important objective of permanent flood protection. Permanent flood protection remains one of The Chamber’s highest priorities as this stability is imperative to ensure a strong economy and community.”
We commend ND Governor Burgum and MN Governor Dayton for assembling a joint task force back in October of 2017 to collaborate in exploring permanent flood protection solutions. In the official MN DNR permit approval news release on December 27, 2018, DRN Commissioner Tom Landwehr noted the significant role the work of this task force played in the final decision. Craig Whitney, President and CEO of The Chamber, added, “If it was not for the leadership of Governor Burgum in working with Governor Dayton in putting this task force together, we would not be reaching this important landmark today.”
The joint ND and MN Task Force was created in October of 2017 to “achieve a timely solution that protects lives, property and the economic engine that is the Fargo-Moorhead region from catastrophic flooding while also addressing upstream and downstream concern,” said Governor Burgum in his announcement of the appointed members to the task force. The task force was co-chaired by the two governors, and each appointed eight additional members to serve.
Additionally, The Chamber applauds our numerous local leaders who have dedicated their time and energy to secure permanent flood protection. We appreciate their perseverance and commitment to this important project.
We are committed to working with all necessary parties to move the project along through securing the remaining funding commitments needed to complete the project ensuring permanent flood protection for our region.
