3:30 PM - 5:00 PM CDTDescription
The sheer frenetic pace of our lives, hierarchical mazes that are part of the workplace architecture, the global landscape in which our work occurs, all contribute to the complexity of leading well. Thomas Friedman’s book, “Thank you for Being Late” describes these times of tectonic shift as the supernova of times and states that, ironically the problem is pace and the answer is pause. The way of leading in the 21st century must address the human need for connectedness and greater meaning. Doing so has the potential to empower our individual and collective future.
We are a society than seems incessantly preoccupied with the outer life. The inner and outer lives appear to be at odds. Similarly, it seems our inner life journey and workplace endeavors are also separate. This session follows the inner journey of 20 successful Midwest leaders and their way of leading that integrates both life and livelihood. This group recognized leadership as an ongoing journey, from the inside out, that comes from a deeper reality that ultimately heightens one’s awareness and ability to lead well. The evidence in this study shows that the integration of life and livelihood positively contribute to one’s measure of success.
This session will explore the attributes of Midwest leaders and has the potential to inform your leadership practice from the inside out.
You will learn to build the case for:- Viewing life and livelihood as integrated elements
- Human resource development and policy implications that build connectedness to organizational mission, vision and values
- Developing your inner life as a way to nurture the attributes of integrity, respect, compassion and being non-judgmental
- Considering organizational initiatives that see things whole and seek ways to respect the unique needs among employees

About the presenter
Dr. Lonnie Pederson is Executive Director of the Jeremiah Program Fargo-Moorhead Marcine and Louise Campus. Jeremiah Program offers one of the nation’s most successful strategies for transforming families from poverty to prosperity two generations at a time. Jeremiah’s holistic approach begins with establishing a supportive community for determined single mothers to pursue a career-track, college education. Through a combination of quality early childhood education, a safe and affordable place to live, and empowerment and life skills training, families find stability and a path out of poverty. Headquartered in Minneapolis, Jeremiah Program is expanding throughout the country to meet the growing demand for its model. Formerly, Dr. Pederson served as the Director of the Master of Arts in Leadership (MAL) Program at the University of Jamestown, Fargo Campus. In addition to her role at Jeremiah, she continues to teach in an adjunct professor role in the MAL program. She has over 20 years of various non-profit leadership experience including human services, healthcare, and higher education (including Concordia College 1997-2011). Professor Pederson holds an Ed.D. in leadership from the University of St. Thomas. Her current scholarship focuses on the intersection of Spirituality & Work. Her philosophy of leadership can best be summarized by a pioneer in the field of organizational theory, Mary Parker Follett (1924), “Leadership in not defined by the exercise of power, but by the capacity to increase the sense of power among those led. The most essential work of the leader is to create more leaders.”
