Sometimes it is hard to be human in the workplace. We have all had instances where we observe a colleague struggling or behaving different than usual. In these moments, it is common to question ourselves and wonder if you should approach them, what to say and how to help.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 1 in 5 adults in the United States experience mental illness each year. Over the course of our professional lives, most people will work with or supervise individuals with a mental illness – or experience mental illness themselves. So how do we best support team members navigating mental illness while maintaining momentum toward reaching organizational goals focused on outcomes, productivity and revenue generation?
Whether you are a supervisor, colleague or individual with a mental illness, join us to learn more on how to navigate mental health in the workplace, including the damage mental illness can play, both professionally and personally, when left unaddressed, including unfavorable turnover and productivity, and potentially, life-altering consequences.

About the presenters
DaNae Cordie has used her experience from her professional and personal history to open conversations with several employers and employees in order to develop an understanding of the struggles that exist surrounding the navigation of the employer/employee relationship when mental illness is a factor. With this information driving her passion to make a change, she has become a catalyst for mental health advocacy in our community. She is working to eliminate stigma, spark open conversations, and create a solution to help our workforce that is affected by mental illness.
Dr. Jon Ulven practices psychology, specializing in behavioral health and psychotherapy. He treats conditions including anxiety disorders, depressive disorders and adjustment disorders. He has worked in a primary care setting for more than 10 years and takes a broader perspective of health. He often helps patients cope with medical conditions such as insomnia, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, heart attack, diabetes and COPD. He also serves as department chair of adult psychology in Fargo-Moorhead and clinical assistant professor of clinical neuroscience at UND School of Medicine. He trains residents in Sanford Health internal medicine, family medicine, and psychiatry programs. He also provides care to physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses and residents who are at risk or demonstrating signs of burnout.
Julie Vandrovec, MS, LPC, is a Clinical Associate with The Village Business Institute. She has a master of science degree in community counseling from University of Mary, Bismarck; she is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of North Dakota. Julie has many years of experience in counseling, working with adult and adolescent clients. Her areas of interest are depression, anxiety, self-esteem and self-care. She currently provides EAP counseling, training and consulting services.
