A sweet little story: Nothing Bundt Cakes

Nothing Bundt Cakes is a national company, based entirely around, you guessed it, bundt cakes! We are lucky to have one store in our own metro. Founded by Dena Tripp and Debbie Shwetz in Las Vegas in 1997, they joined forces—or better yet, kitchens—to make cakes for their friends and family. They quickly realized this side hustle could be something more. Flash forward, and the Nothing Bundt Cakes brand has grown nationwide. The West Fargo bakery is store #340 and is the first in North Dakota, opening about one year ago on May 14, 2019.

While some bakeries have a smorgasbord of sweets to select, Nothing Bundt Cakes doubles down on one product in various sizes and 11 different flavors, topped with a signature butter cream cheese frosting. Rinda Norberg, owner, says they are not just a bakery; they are a “bundt”tique. They can be your one-stop-shop on the way to a party for your cake, candles, balloons and more. And, you can pick up gifts, cards, or gift cards for every occasion.

Before Nothing Bundt Cakes, co-owner Jenna Larson was a nurse at Sanford Health, and Norberg was a stay-at-home step-mom who dreamt of her own business. In fact, she had her eye on this business in particular for years before it became a reality. “I loved the vibe when I walked into one of their bakeries for the first time,” Norberg said. “It was such a simple concept and, of course, the cake was amazing.”

With that, they brought the concept here, noticing that it was a niche to be filled. Norberg admitted she had a moment of cold feet. “Jenna and I were Dallas for one month of training prior to opening,” she recalled. “About a week, in I thought to myself, what the heck was I thinking... I am 50 years old, have three teenage kids at home, now I am opening my own business?! But not one day have I ever regretted it.”

One reason they’ve never looked back is because of the kindness and generosity from the people here. “Jenna and I truly love coming to work every day,” Norberg said. “We love interacting with people and hearing their stories of what they are celebrating. We have enjoyed making this brand recognizable in this area.”

Working at Nothing Bundt Cakes is pretty sweet, too. “We try to make our bakery a fun atmosphere, and we have been blessed to have great employees.” Those employees seem feel the same. “It’s a super fun environment with great people,” Brandi Howard said. “I am always excited to come to work,” Bobbie Kjolberg said. “It doesn’t actually feel like work. It feels more like family.”

Prior to opening, Norberg and Larson agreed that giving back to the community was important to them. Since, they have donated cakes to fundraisers and various events throughout the year, as well as to the Salvation Army and the Gladys Ray House. This past Good Friday, they surprised Essentia Health employees with about 500 cakes for all of their hard work.

“Even during this COVID-19 pandemic, people have thanked us for being open so they can try to maintain a ‘normalcy’ in their lives regardless of what they are celebrating, whether a birthday, an anniversary or a gender reveal,” Norberg said. “Our customers are amazing! They have been loyal and patient.  We can’t say enough about how happy we are to be part of the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo business community.”

Right now, they want you to know that you’re welcome to reach out and let them bring you some joy. “It is important to us to give back to the community because this community is what makes this business successful, which has made this dream of ours become a reality,” Norberg said.

While their lobby is currently closed to walk-in guests as of this issue going to press, they are offering curbside pickup, online orders and half price delivery. With Nurses Week, Teachers Week, graduations and Mother’s Day coming up, they hope you consider their bakery for order. In fact, they can accommodate most orders the same day, though advance notice is appreciated for large orders.
